He began his career as a musician when he was just 16 years of age in the year 1978. He co-founded a band named Exodus in the year 1979 which he stayed until he received an invitation from Metallica in the year 1983.
He had named the band after a novel by Leon Uris. Exodus proved to be very influential in the Bay Area thrash movement.
When he joined Metallica in the year 1983, the band traveled to the east coast to record their first debut album – Kill ‘Em all.
